CHICAGO — Less than 4% of respondents to a Wire survey report their operations were impacted in spring 2006 by walkouts or boycotts that were related to immigration-reform demonstrations.
Against the backdrop of legislation proposed to toughen U.S. immigration laws, only 22.6% of respondents believe a crackdown on illegal immigrants would substantially reduce the available labor pool in their area and thus make it more difficult for them to hire workers.
The Wire survey also asked managers and administrators to respond to the following, stating whether they agree or disagree with each statement:
• The U.S. immigration system is faulty and needs to be fixed.
Agree - 90% Disagree – 10%
• If an immigrant has been in this country working, paying taxes and learning English, there should be a way for them to become a citizen.
Agree - 81% Disagree – 19%
• Deporting all illegal immigrants in the United States is unrealistic.
Agree - 71% Disagree – 29%
• If an illegal immigrant has been in this country working, paying taxes and learning English, there should be a way for them to become a citizen.
Agree - 55% Disagree – 45%
• I anticipate the U.S. government will apply even greater pressure on employers to verify citizenship status of prospective employees.
Agree - 87% Disagree – 13%
