New Accreditation Council Seeks Input on Healthcare Processing Standards

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Healthcare Laundry Accreditation Council (HLAC) is seeking the industry's input on proposed standards by which it will inspect and accredit laundries that process healthcare textiles.
Its fee-based process ($5,000 per plant; owners of multiple plants can receive a 20% discount) will be voluntary, but the HLAC anticipates leading healthcare laundries, both for-profit and not-for-profit, will seek accreditation.
Its Web site, www.hlacnet.org, contains a draft of Accreditation Standards for Processing Reusable Textiles for Use in Healthcare Facilities, which covers the complete textile processing cycle — from handling and transporting soiled healthcare textiles (the standards don't address surgical textiles) to in-plant processing and delivery back to the customer.
HLAC invites public comment by March 31, after which its board of directors — an independent group of professionals that includes commercial laundry operators, association executives, co-op and on-premise laundry operators, and representatives of federal government organizations — will establish the working standard to be used for the next year.
