Maine Institutes New Wastewater-Dumping Rules

AUGUSTA, Maine — Cruise ships that visit Maine this year are prohibited from dumping laundry and other wastewater within three miles of the shore unless it meets the same water quality standards as municipal treatment plants, according to the Portland (Maine) Press Herald.
The state’s Department of Environmental Protection is launching a new permit system, but the International Council of Cruise Lines says its members have already voluntarily agreed not to discharge wastewater within four miles of the entire U.S. coastline.
