Groups Honor Cruise Ship, Hotel for Green Initiatives

LOS ANGELES — The port of Venice, Italy, this week presented Crystal Cruises’ Crystal Serenity with the environmental Venice Blue Flag award for the third straight year, while the Hyatt Regency Irvine announced that it has received The California Integrated Waste Management Board’s 2009 Waste Reduction Award (WRAP).
The Venice Blue Flag award recognizes the Crystal Serenity’s voluntary efforts to safeguard the city of Venice, reducing air emissions by burning low-sulfur fuel in port. Since the award’s inception in 2007, Crystal Serenity has been recognized for its commitment to reducing its environmental impact, both on land and by sea.
Crystal Cruises says it has long been committed to following environmentally conscious practices aboard its ships. Crystal utilizes 100% recyclable EcoHangers on board, an alternative to the wire and plastic hangers filling landfills each year, as well as washable, reusable garment bags for onboard laundry presentation.
Far beyond simple green initiatives such as electing not to change guest linens daily, the 536-room Hyatt Regency Irvine has continued to enhance its green program and protect the environment, a hotel official says.
The hotel utilizes a hot-water reclaimer to collect its laundry wastewater and preheat the incoming water before it enters the boiler. The AAA Four-Diamond property also features EnergyStar™ appliances and uses only environmentally safe cleaners in guestrooms.
“We are grateful to The California Integrated Waste Management Board for their recognition of our concerted efforts to better our hotel’s impact on the environment,” says Colleen Kareti, general manager of the hotel that serves the nearby John Wayne Airport. “We are continually striving to reduce our carbon footprint and to bring new green initiatives to the property.”
