Ecolab R&D Facilities Earn LEED-EB Gold Certification

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Ecolab Inc.’s corporate research, development and engineering facilities on the company’s Allan L. Schuman Campus in Eagan, Minn., have earned LEED-EB Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
“Ecolab has long been an industry leader in sustainability — every day we help our customers reduce waste, conserve water, save energy and improve safety through our concentrated, high-efficiency cleaning products and technology and our personalized service,” says Douglas M. Baker Jr., Ecolab’s chairman, president and chief executive officer. “The LEED certification further demonstrates that our commitment to sustainable practices is not only for our customers, but also in our own facilities.”
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System provides third-party verification that a building was designed and built with energy savings, water efficiency, CO2-emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources in mind, Ecolab says. The LEED-EB designation is awarded to existing buildings that have been retrofitted to meet LEED standards.
The reconstruction of the Schuman campus included the use of efficient lighting fixtures and other methods of conserving energy, a heat-recovery system in the labs, and low-VOC-emitting materials, as well as the salvage and reuse of materials, and an expanded recycling program.
Ecolab also sought to preserve the surrounding natural environment during and after construction by working with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to develop a forestry and wildlife stewardship plan.
