JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Richard Hoelscher earned the Association for Linen Management’s (ALM) highest management award when he was named the 2008 Heywood Wiley Manager of the Year during ALM’s Annual Educational Conference last Monday.
Hoelscher, an ALM district director, is associate director of linen services for Parkland Health & Hospital System, Dallas, where he oversees the laundering of more than 10 million pounds of healthcare linen annually for four hospitals. He represents healthcare laundering on the 2008 American Laundry News Panel of Experts.
The association’s other top award — the 2008 Allied Tradesperson of the Year — went to Tony Cardillo, a textile consultant for Standard Textile Co., Cincinnati.
ALM members gathered here at the Wyndham Jacksonville Riverwalk for the association’s 68th annual conference, including a vendor fair, officer elections and a full slate of educational seminars.
Senior Vice President Bart Carpenter was elected ALM president in absentia. Carpenter, a laundry production coordinator at Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras, Ore., fell ill shortly before boarding his flight to the conference, but he felt well enough to greet attendees by phone from his home during the awards banquet.
Randy Wendland, laundry manager at Port Huron (Mich.) Hospital/HHA Services, narrowly defeated Hoelscher, 77-71, for senior vice president in the association’s only contested race.
Also new to the board is Tom Mantey, external accounts manager for Commonwealth Linen Services, Roanoke, Va., who was elected administrative secretary.
Wes Breedlove, director of linen service, Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby, N.C., was re-elected vice president, and Bill Smith, director of EVS operations, South Region of ARAMARK Healthcare, Madisonville, Ky., was re-elected chief financial officer.
Barb Bowen, who was ALM president in 2004-08, will serve another board term as immediate past president. She’s director of environmental services at Cedar Village, Mason, Ohio.
The association’s next national meeting will occur around the time of the 2009 Clean Show in New Orleans.
